- Spanning a decade (2012–2021), this body of work encapsulates Damao’s profound insights into the human condition. Interweaving performance, installation, and painting, the artist establishes a spatial topology of “Landlessness,” exploring how modern individuals confront abandonment, alienation, and the scrutinizing gaze within spatial foldings and interactions.
The 2012 work Origins (Sacrifice) and Existence presents a radical dialogue between the physical body and the earth. A nude figure, coiled within a narrow crevice beneath the sod, performs far more than an inquiry into the origins of life—it delivers a striking visual manifesto of landlessness. When stable “ground” ceases to exist, one can only seek temporary refuge amidst non-referential confrontations.
On the right, the canvas The Blind Man’s Compass in the Dark offers a spiritual reconstruction of this spatial anxiety. On the left, a deconstructed, heavily textured black mountain embodies the unyielding weight of memory and history. In direct opposition stands a path of pure, highly saturated cobalt blue, serving as a spiritual compass to guide the wayfarer. To the right of this path, a soft, ethereal plume of pink smoke ascends—the very “foam floating between survival and sacrifice,” symbolizing both the transient void of modern existence and a promise of spiritual redemption. The blind man’s gaze no longer confirms an external order; it becomes an internal, absent gaze. - 右侧的布面油画《黑夜中盲人的罗盘》，则是对此类空间焦虑的精神性重构。左侧被解构、具厚重质感的黑色山体，象征着难以撼动的记忆与历史重负；与之对峙的，是一条纯净、高饱和度的钴蓝色路径，如精神罗盘般指引穿行。路径右侧，一团柔和缥缈的粉色烟雾升腾而起——这正是那团“浮动在生存与祭祀之间的泡沫”，既隐喻着现代生活的瞬息虚无，又预示着某种精神救赎。盲人的凝视不再是对外部秩序的确认，而是一种内在的、不在场的凝视。他在粉色泡沫与黑色山体之间、生存异化与祭祀救赎之间，通过空间的折叠与交互，完成了精神上的“回家”
