Since relocating her studio to Seattle in 2018, artist Damao has continued to deepen the artistic concepts cultivated during her time at Caochangdi in Beijing and Blue Roof in Chengdu. The core of her practice revolves around Deleuzean “folds” and “negative capability.” Exploring the floating tension and anchoring force derived from shedding regional similarities and distinctiveness in favor of open, infinite possibilities, she frequently employs post-industrial visual symbols and mediums embedded with anxiety and alienation to evoke profound, intimate emotional resonance within new cultural narratives. Damao’s practice spans oil on canvas, installation, performance art, photography, moving image, and poetic texts, showcasing a keen insight into contemporary human existence within an increasingly fluid and diverse era.
Her works have received coverage from major media outlets including Harper’s Bazaar and Discovery Channel, and have been featured in prominent exhibitions such as the Chengdu Biennale, Art Beijing, and the Pingyao International Photography Festival. In 2014, she held her solo exhibition Anchor of Time in Shanghai.
In 2025, she established her fourth studio, tucked away in a secret alleyway garden in Zurich. Here, her practice incorporates the rhythm of nature’s four seasons along with concepts of fractals from physics and mathematics, embarking on an artistic experiment that transcends order, de-subjectification, and non-contingency.
